What a Swiss laboratory is admitted and controlled against
A Swiss laboratory that bills compulsory health insurance needs a formal cantonal admission under the Krankenversicherungsgesetz, and its head must hold an FAMH postgraduate title or a Federal Office of Public Health equivalence. Every laboratory takes part in QUALAB external quality control, with at least four ring trials a year for each listed analysis, and insurers can ask for the admission to be withdrawn when that duty is not met. Microbiology laboratories additionally hold a Swissmedic licence valid for at most five years. Analyses are billed from the Analysenliste, the positive list annexed to the KLV, and human-medicine analyses performed for diagnosis or treatment are exempt from VAT.
Every laboratory must take part in at least four external ring trials per calendar year for each of its analyses that fall under external quality control, according to the QUALAB concept for external quality control.

Insurers can apply to the supervisory authority for the withdrawal of a laboratory’s admission to work at the expense of compulsory health insurance when quality-control duties are not met, per the same QUALAB concept.

The head of a laboratory must hold an FAMH postgraduate title in haematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology or genetics, or a Federal Office of Public Health equivalence, under articles 54 and 54a KVV with articles 42 and 43 KLV.

A laboratory performing microbiological diagnostics holds a Swissmedic establishment licence valid for at most five years, renewed on application six months before expiry, and Swissmedic inspects licensed laboratories periodically.
In SamLab: A laboratory profile holding licence references and expiry dates, visible before renewal falls due, and equipment and method registers for the inspection.
