What a Ghanaian laboratory is licensed and inspected against
Clinical and biomedical laboratories in Ghana are licensed by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency under the Health Institutions and Facilities Act 2011 (Act 829): registration, an assessor inspection and board approval lead to a licence for an initial three-year period, after which the agency monitors the facility. The person in charge must be a registered medical laboratory scientist in good standing with the Allied Health Professions Council, whose members renew their PIN every December against annual continuing professional development. A laboratory may be credentialed by the National Health Insurance Authority only once it is certified by the agency, and medical services are exempt from VAT.
HeFRA requires the person in charge of a clinical laboratory to be a qualified medical laboratory scientist with at least a first degree and five years of post-qualification experience, in good standing with the Allied Health Professions Council of Ghana.
