What a French laboratory is authorised and accredited against
In France a laboratoire de biologie médicale may not perform any examination without accreditation covering the whole of its activity, granted by COFRAC to NF EN ISO 15189 under article L6221-1 of the Code de la santé publique; opening is subject to a prior declaration to the Agence régionale de santé, which can oppose it, and the laboratory is directed by a biologiste-responsable. Laboratories take part in external quality evaluation, and the ANSM runs the national quality control. Examinations are billed to Assurance Maladie under the NABM nomenclature by electronic feuille de soins through SESAM-Vitale, and medical biology analyses are exempt from VAT.
A laboratoire de biologie médicale may not perform an examination of medical biology without accreditation covering the totality of its activity, across the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases (Code de la santé publique, article L6221-1).

Opening a laboratory is subject to a prior declaration by its legal representative to the Agence régionale de santé, whose director-general may oppose it, and the laboratory is directed by a biologiste-responsable (articles L6222-1, L6222-2 and L6213-7).

Each site must have at least one biologist available, the laboratory must display its accreditation status in reception, and advertising is prohibited (articles L6222-6 to L6222-8).
