What a Canadian laboratory is inspected against
Laboratory regulation in Canada is provincial. In Ontario no laboratory may operate without a licence from the Director under the Laboratory and Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act, and meeting a designated quality management program is a statutory condition of that licence. Alberta laboratories are accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, British Columbia laboratories by the Diagnostic Accreditation Program, and Accreditation Canada Diagnostics runs the ISO 15189 Plus scheme, mandatory in Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador. In vitro diagnostic devices are licensed federally by Health Canada.
Ontario: a full laboratory licence runs for at most five years and a provisional licence for at most twelve months, and operating a quality management program run by the designated agency is a condition of the licence itself (LSCCLA s. 9).
