What an Austrian laboratory is licensed and assessed against
An Austrian laboratory takes one of two forms. A doctor-run laboratory practice requires entry in the Ärzteliste of the Österreichische Ärztekammer and is bound by the chamber’s Qualitätssicherungsverordnung, with an ÖQMed self-evaluation every five years. A laboratory organised as a selbständiges Ambulatorium is a private Krankenanstalt and needs both an establishment permit and an operating permit from the Landesregierung under the Land’s Krankenanstaltengesetz. Accreditation to EN ISO 15189 is granted by Akkreditierung Austria under the Akkreditierungsgesetz 2012, with re-accreditation at the latest after five years. Statutory-insurance work is documented in certified practice software and settled with the ÖGK each quarter.
Under § 14 of the Ärztekammer’s Qualitätssicherungsverordnung 2023, the reliability of laboratory examinations must be checked through documented participation in ring trials or similar available methods.

Akkreditierung Austria accredits medical laboratories to EN ISO 15189 with re-accreditation at the latest after five years, and its guideline L15 requires the scope record per method to show proficiency-test participation with organiser, date and result.
